Starting this week, sites hosted on Synaps Media can switch on Vellumine search from their hosting panel. Synaps calls it Complete Search, powered by Vellumine. You don't need a script tag, an API key, or a separate account. You click once, and your readers get a search bar that finds more than titles.

This is Vellumine's first hosting partnership, and we're glad it's with Synaps.

How This Started

When we announced Vellumine on the Ghost forum in June, Murat from Synaps Media was one of the first people to try it. He had a search feature for Synaps on his own roadmap, and Vellumine turned out to be close to what he had in mind.

We also live only about 100 km apart, so we met in person in Maastricht that same month. We talked for hours about Ghost, hosting, and what publishers need. By the end of the day, building one integration together made more sense to both of us than building the same thing twice.

Murat explains his side in the Synaps Media announcement: running a reliable search service takes ongoing maintenance and support. A small hosting team can spend that time on hosting, while a search provider spends it on search. We think the Ghost ecosystem gets stronger when independent providers work together this way.

What Synaps Media Customers Get

Ghost's built-in search covers post titles and excerpts. With Complete Search turned on, your readers get:

  • Full-text search. Readers can find a phrase from the middle of a post, not just a word from the title.
  • Pages in results. Your About, Contact, and documentation pages are searchable too.
  • Members-only content without leaks. Paid and members-only posts show up in results with a title and short excerpt. The protected content itself stays behind your paywall, so search becomes a way to win new subscribers.
  • Your whole archive. On large sites, Ghost's built-in search only covers the most recent 10,000 posts. With Complete Search, every published post stays searchable.
  • Typo tolerance. A search for "javscript" still finds your JavaScript posts.
  • Search analytics. You can see what readers search for most, and which searches return nothing. A search with no results is a topic your readers want and you haven't covered yet.

How It Works

  1. In the Synaps Media panel, turn on Complete Search for your site.
  2. Synaps creates a protected, read-only API key for Vellumine. Vellumine can read your content but can't change anything on your site.
  3. Vellumine indexes your posts, pages, tags, and authors in the background.
  4. The Vellumine search bar replaces Ghost's built-in search automatically.

Synaps bills the add-on with your hosting plan, and you can cancel it at any time. For plans and pricing, see the Synaps Media announcement.

Search analytics follow the same privacy rules as everywhere else on Vellumine. We look at what readers search for, not who they are. We don't use cookies, store IP addresses, or build reader profiles.

Not on Synaps Media?

Vellumine still works with any Ghost site, whether you use Ghost(Pro), self-host, or another hosting provider. You can start a free trial and connect your publication in a few minutes. Depending on the plan, a direct Vellumine subscription also includes features the Synaps add-on doesn't offer yet, such as the Grid search template, filter and sort panels, and weekly email reports.

What's Next

Murat calls this the first phase of the partnership, and we agree. We'll keep improving the integration together with the Synaps team.

Thank you to Murat and the Synaps Media team for trusting us with search for their customers. If you're on Synaps and turn on Complete Search, we'd love to hear how it works for your readers. You can reply to Murat's post on the Ghost forum or contact us directly.
